On 20 May 2025, the Carbon Farming MED Capacity Building Workshop took place in Brussels, bringing together experts in agricultural policy, EU-funded projects, scientific research, and stakeholder organizations to explore how carbon farming can develop into a sustainable and profitable land management model across the Mediterranean.
Organized by EURAF and the Carbon Farming MED project, the in-person event provided valuable updates on the Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF) and its relevance for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). A key focus was on the Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) framework, essential for ensuring robust and transparent carbon markets. These policy developments are crucial in aligning carbon farming practices with EU climate goals and creating a trustworthy system for carbon credit certification. The workshop also served as a platform for sharing practical experiences and challenges faced by farmers, foresters, and land managers actively engaged in agroforestry and carbon farming across different Mediterranean regions. Discussions highlighted the technical, regulatory, and financial barriers that need addressing to make carbon farming a viable business model. Experts emphasized the importance of close cooperation between European institutions, national authorities, local communities, and land managers to harmonize implementation approaches and build effective, long-term incentives for carbon removals.
