Our story
Carbon Farming MED emerged from our shared determination to tackle the escalating challenges of climate change and promote sustainable agriculture in the Mediterranean. With a collective vision to help achieve climate neutrality in the land sector by 2035, we are embarking on a mission to advance a resilient Mediterranean agriculture system.
A GREENER FUTURE FOR ALL
Our project is a testament to the power of collaboration across borders. It brings together nine organisations from six countries, each contributing unique expertise to achieve a common goal.
Our diverse partnership is committed to addressing and promoting sustainable agriculture in the Mediterranean. Through collaboration and innovation, we are forging a path toward a greener future for all.
PARTNERS
BETA Technological Centre (Spain)
The Technological Centre in Biodiversity, Ecology, Environmental and Food Technology was established in June 2014 to enhance research in environmental technologies at the Universitat de Vic-Universitat Central de Catalunya (UVic-UCC).
The main mission of the BETA Technological Centre is to be a key player in technological development, improving the competitiveness and quality of life in rural societies. This mission is driven by executing R&D&I projects and transferring knowledge to both the private and public sectors.
CREA-AA (Italy)
CREA-AA conducts studies and research on agricultural and forest ecosystems, focusing on their characterisation and space-time modelling through interdisciplinary approaches to support sustainable management.
They analyse crop system dynamics to optimise productivity and resource use. Integrating various research methods, including field trials, agroecological indicators, and simulation models, they provide information for developing agrotechnical routes aimed at climate mitigation and resilience. Their work focuses on increasing soil organic matter content and enhancing soil carbon sequestration.
CENER 21 (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
The Center for Energy, Environment, and Resources (CENER 21), established in 2006, promotes sustainable development in South East Europe. They collaborate with international organisations, governments, industry, and local authorities on climate change, circular economy, biodiversity, energy efficiency, and renewable energy.
CENER 21 helps policymakers develop and implement solutions for resource efficiency, climate, and energy issues, balancing environmental and economic interests. Their mission is to foster sustainable development through stakeholder cooperation.
Azolla Projects (Spain)
Azolla Projects is a NatureTech initiative that funds and supports the transition to regenerative agriculture. They pay farmers for capturing CO2 through sustainable practices and help companies achieve “carbon neutral” and “nature positive” status.
Their mission is to restore the natural balance by scaling up regenerative agriculture. Recognising farmers’ vital role, they provide financial support and tools to assist during the transition, which may temporarily reduce production. They believe technology can enhance natural processes for a win-win strategy.
IHE (Slovenia)
The Institute for Health and Environment connects key sectors of public health and the environment. Their mission is to foster open, meaningful communication with diverse societal stakeholders. With a commitment to collaboration, the Institute partners with governments, NGOs, and businesses to advance their goals.
Focusing on air quality and climate change, they work to create a positive social impact in health and environmental areas. Their initiatives empower public health and environmental processes and promote sustainable development innovation. They conduct research, provide education, and advocate for policies that support healthier communities and ecosystems.
TUC (Greece)
The Technical University of Crete (TUC) is dedicated to advancing modern engineering through cutting-edge research and industry collaboration. The project will be hosted at HersLab, a leading environmental engineering centre specialising in water quality management, hydrogeochemical modelling, sustainable land management, and soil remediation.
HersLab integrates field studies, laboratory experiments, and mathematical modelling to address environmental challenges and has extensive experience in European and Greek funded projects, excelling in watershed monitoring and soil critical zone modelling.
CRITT IAA Sud (France)
CRITT IAA Sud (Centre Régional d’Innovation et de Transfert de Technologies Agroalimentaire Sud) is a non-profit organisation founded in 1989 to support technical projects and promote economic development in the agri-food sector.
Specialising in assisting agrofood SMEs with reducing environmental impacts, CRITT’s certified experts provide support through innovation and technology transfer, including project management, training, and capacity-building. They have participated in numerous EU-funded projects (e.g., MED, H2020, Erasmus+) and national projects in France.
Euroregio (France/Spain)
The Euroregion Pyrenees Mediterranean, founded in 2004, is a cooperative political organisation comprising the Government of Catalonia (ES), the Government of the Balearic Islands (ES), and the Region Occitanie (FR).
Since 2009, it has operated as a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) and is recognised as an interregional cooperation institution. Currently, the Euroregion is involved as a partner or lead partner in 8 European projects.
EURAF (France)
The European Agroforestry Federation (EURAF) promotes the use of trees on farms and silvopastoralism across Europe.
They raise awareness, support education, foster research, influence policy, and encourage investment in agroforestry. EURAF’s network includes 28 affiliated entities in 20 EU countries and 5 non-EU countries. Their mission is to achieve 10% tree crown cover on grassland and cropland in all European regions by 2040.
