Scaling Carbon Farming Solutions: Insights from the WEFE Nexus Workshop in Crete

17 Mar, 2026

The Carbon Farming MED project recently reached a significant milestone in fostering Mediterranean resilience by participating in the WEFE Nexus Solutions & Tools Workshop. Held from March 4–6, 2026, at the Center for Mediterranean Architecture in Chania, Greece, the event brought together a diverse community of experts to bridge the gap between scientific innovation and policy implementation.

This workshop, organized by the Technical University of Crete under the EcoFuture project, focused on the “Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems” (WEFE) Nexus. The primary objective was to synthesize outcomes from various PRIMA, HORIZON, and INTERREG projects to develop a policy brief for scaling up integrated resource management across the region.

During the session dedicated to WEFE Nexus Solutions and Demonstration Pilots, our project partner Carlos Alberto Torres Guerrero from BETA Technological Centre (UVIC-UCC) contributed to the presentation regarding the scaling of carbon farming solutions for a resilient Mediterranean. By participating alongside other regional initiatives, the Carbon Farming MED project highlighted how carbon sequestration strategies can be viewed within the broader WEFE framework. The discussions emphasized that many tools and solutions specifically address the unique characteristics of Mediterranean water, soil, and energy. This involvement allowed the project to explore new collaboration opportunities and align carbon farming goals with the needs of various stakeholders and policymakers.

For Carbon Farming MED, this event was a valuable opportunity to ensure our solutions are integrated into a coordinated, multi-sectoral effort to protect the Mediterranean’s future.
