The Carbon Farming MED project has released its final project video, showcasing the journey undertaken to advance carbon farming across the Mediterranean.
The video highlights how the project combined scientific research, farmer engagement, digital innovation, and policy dialogue to address one of agriculture’s key climate challenges: increasing soil carbon sequestration while supporting sustainable and resilient farming systems.
A central element of the project was its close collaboration with farmers. Through pilot activities and on-the-ground engagement, Carbon Farming MED generated valuable insights into how organic and biodynamic farming practices can contribute to soil carbon storage under Mediterranean conditions. These bottom-up efforts helped complement existing scientific knowledge and ensured that project outcomes remained closely aligned with practical farming realities.
Building on these experiences, the project developed the first Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) platform specifically tailored to Mediterranean agricultural conditions. The open-source platform enables farmers, cooperatives and project developers to estimate soil carbon sequestration potential and greenhouse gas emissions, supporting the design and monitoring of carbon farming initiatives across Europe.
The video reflects not only on the achievements of Carbon Farming MED, but also on the foundations laid for future action. Following the approval of the Interreg Euro-MED Fast Lane transfer phase, the project will continue working to transfer results, engage new territories and stakeholders, and accelerate the uptake of climate-smart agricultural practices across the Mediterranean.
