Conference: Carbon Farming in the Mediterranean Region

Conference: Carbon Farming in the Mediterranean Region

The Conference will take place in Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain) on 28 and 29 May.

About the event

Human activities that generate greenhouse gas emissions are causing the climate to change at an accelerated rate, with negative consequences for society and biodiversity. Agriculture can be an ally in mitigating climate change through practices that capture carbon in the soil or in plants. Doing so, farmers bring additional benefits to the community. Voluntary carbon credit markets are emerging to compensate them for this service. The idea is that companies can offset their emissions by paying farmers who capture carbon.

The Carbon Farming MED project, funded by the Interreg Euro-MED programme, seeks to encourage carbon farming in the Mediterranean area. However, to achieve its goals, the specific characteristics of this region must be taken into account. That’s why since 2024 Carbon Farming MED has been developing a theoretical framework, reinforced by tests on pilot farms.

The conference is an opportunity to share the results of this work. The main topics of the conference will include:

  • Regenerative agriculture and agroforestry, opportunities and challenges
  • The Monitoring, Reporting and Verification processus
  • Carbon credits market and other business models

There will also be a special focus on the platform created by the project to calculate the carbon footprint of farms.

The event will bring together policymakers, researchers, farmers and enterprises from across the Mediterranean region to exchange experiences and discuss actionable recommendations.
