About the event
This event is organised within the Carbon Farming MED project, with the aim of promoting knowledge exchange, innovation and capacity building in the field of carbon farming, sustainable agriculture and climate-resilient food systems.
The event, titled “CarbonConnect- Sustainable Practices from Farm to Fork”, will take place on 29 June 2026 at the Agricultural Estate / Experimental Field Butmir in Sarajevo. It is jointly organised by the University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences and CENER 21.
CarbonConnect aims to promote and popularise the concept of carbon farming and sustainable agricultural practices that contribute to more resilient agriculture, improved soil quality, reduced negative environmental impacts, and the creation of new development and market opportunities in the agri-food sector.
The event will bring together representatives of governmental and non-governmental institutions, agricultural producers, processors, civil society organisations, secondary school pupils, university students, researchers, citizens and other interested stakeholders engaged in sustainable practices “from farm to fork”.
The programme will include thematic presentations, practical examples, parallel group sessions and a competitive hackathon for pupils and students. Participants will discuss practical solutions such as reduced or minimum tillage, cover crops, crop rotation, agroforestry, use of compost and organic fertilisers, biochar application, preservation of soil organic matter, sustainable water management and other practices that can contribute to more sustainable and resilient agricultural production.
Special attention will be given to the challenges of transitioning towards more sustainable production models, opportunities for producers, institutions and markets, as well as trends shaping the future of the agri-food sector.
The event will be organised around three main components:
i) thematic presentations and examples from practice, focused on the promotion of sustainable and innovative solutions in agriculture and the food sector;
ii) a competitive hackathon for pupils and students, during which teams will develop and present ideas and potential solutions for applying sustainable practices in real-life conditions;
iii) interactive workshops and parallel group sessions with participants, where different stakeholder groups will discuss key knowledge, skills, barriers and needs for the wider adoption of sustainable agricultural practices.
The final part of the event will focus on the presentation of hackathon team ideas, key workshop conclusions, the announcement of the best ideas, awarding of prizes/certificates, and informal networking among participants.

Why it matters
Carbon farming provides an opportunity to connect sustainable agricultural practices with improved soil health, climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity protection, more efficient land management and long-term resilience of agricultural production.
At the same time, the transition towards more sustainable production models requires knowledge exchange, practical guidance, cooperation among different actors and a better understanding of the needs and challenges faced by producers, advisors, students, institutions and the wider community.
By bringing together diverse stakeholders and combining expert presentations, practical discussions, interactive workshops and a student hackathon, CarbonConnect will support awareness-raising, capacity building and the development of new ideas for applying sustainable agricultural practices in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
