About the Event

This event is organised within the Carbon Farming MED project, with the aim of promoting knowledge exchange, awareness-raising and regional dialogue on carbon farming, biodiversity, sustainable agriculture and climate-resilient land management.

The event will take place in Sarajevo on 22 and 23 May 2026, bringing together academic, professional and educational activities linked to the role of agriculture in climate change mitigation and adaptation. It will connect the topic of carbon farming with broader discussions on agricultural economics, biodiversity protection, landscape characteristics and sustainable development in the Mediterranean and wider regional context.

Programme

22 May 2026: 09:0016:00

On 22 May 2026, the programme will start with activities marking International Day for Biological Diversity, focusing on the preservation of indigenous plant varieties and the importance of biodiversity in agricultural systems. From 9:00 to 10:00, indigenous apple varieties will be planted at the University of Sarajevo- Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences, followed by the planting of indigenous tomato varieties with students at the Secondary Vocational School for Environment and Wood Design from 10:30 to 12:00.

The central professional part of the event will be organised within the Interdepartmental Meeting of Agricultural Economists 2026 in Sarajevo, held on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the Institute for Agricultural and Food Industry Economics. From 13:30 to 15:00, a panel discussion titled “Accelerating carbon market development for climate change mitigation and adaptation in Mediterranean agriculture” will be held. The discussion will focus on the potential of carbon farming to support sustainable land management, improve soil health, strengthen climate resilience and create new opportunities through carbon market development.

23 May 2026: 10:0013:30

On 23 May 2026, the programme will continue with a field visit to Igman Olympic Mountain. Since the event will gather regional participants, this visit will provide an opportunity to gain insight into the wider landscape characteristics, natural conditions and environmental context in which agriculture in Bosnia and Herzegovina takes place. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit and experience the natural richness of the Sarajevo region, while reflecting on the importance of biodiversity, ecosystem services and sustainable land management in relation to climate-resilient agriculture and carbon farming.

Who should attend

The event is intended for a regional audience including:

  • Agricultural economists
  • University professors and researchers
  • Students
  • Agribusiness representatives
  • Farmers and land managers

What will be covered

  • An introduction to the role of carbon farming in climate change mitigation and adaptation
  • A presentation of the Carbon Farming MED MRV (Monitoring, Reporting and Verification) tool supporting the structured assessment and comparison of practices
  • Discussion on carbon farming practices, their practical application, potential benefits and limitations in the regional context

Why it matters

Carbon farming offers an opportunity to connect sustainable agricultural practices with improved soil health, carbon sequestration, biodiversity protection and more efficient land management. At the same time, the development of carbon markets can create new opportunities for farmers, land managers and rural areas, but it also requires clear understanding of applicable practices, monitoring tools, enabling conditions and potential limitations.

By bringing together regional stakeholders, presenting tools for carbon farming practices and opening discussion on their application in the region, this event will support knowledge exchange, cooperation and a better understanding of how carbon farming can contribute to more sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture.
